As part of our work to enhance our city’s image and build the Houston brand, the Greater Houston Partnership led a trip to New York City to meet with top media outlets in August.

Partnership Chair Jamey Rootes teamed up Dr. Stephen Klineberg, the founder of the Kinder Institute of Urban Research at Rice University, to tell the Houston story. We tapped into Houston’s unique diversity and outstanding quality of life when talking to reporters. Additionally, Dr. Klineberg shared population data and immigration trends that demonstrate how Houston became the most ethnically diverse city in the nation.  In fact, if you want to see what the U.S. will look like in 25 years, simply take a snapshot of Houston today.

In less than 48 hours, we met with 11 national and international media outlets resulting in three placements and 50 million media impressions. Outlets included TheStreet.com, Bloomberg Radio, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Bloomberg Pursuits, LeMonde (France), Dong-A Ilbo (East Asia Daily based in Korea), The Financial Times, U.S. News & World Reports, The New York Times, Forbes SportsMoney and CNN Money.  See links and photos below.

Last year, the Partnership took Bill McKeon – Chief Strategy & Development Officer and Executive Vice President @ Texas Medical Center – and Melinda Richter, Head of Johnson & Johnson JLABS to New York to promote Houston’s life sciences sector and our innovation culture.

To broaden our message this year, we embedded our social media team on the mission to help bring the stories back to our local audiences.  Thanks to our Digital Ambassador, Shelbi Nicole, for making the trip up north and helping us launch our new social media campaign #TeamHouston.  Shelbi will be sharing her perspective of the trip on our blog soon, so check back for that story.
