Breathe in the fresh air

The city of Houston boasts a whopping 37,851 acres of public parks and green space where Houstonians gather to relax and play every day. Hermann Park, in the middle of the city, hosts the Miller Outdoor Theatre and Japanese Gardens. Discovery Green brings green space to downtown, providing recreation and entertainment in an urban park setting. At Memorial Park you'll find plenty of fitness lovers running the trails or playing the courts. And of course, the Buffalo Bayou, Houston's landmark waterway, winds its way through the city, connecting many of the parks and green space that dot the area.

One With Nature

Get up close and personal with Mother Nature by exploring the natural beauty that Houston has to offer. Find your serenity at the Mercer Arboretum, home to the region's largest collection of native and cultivated plants; or walk the trails of the Houston Arboretum, a 155-acre nature sanctuary next to Memorial Park. Houstonians actively promote the preservation and protection of our city's green space with groups likes Trees for Houston, Houston Wilderness, and the Bayou City Preservation Association. For an active approach, hop on one of the hike and bike trails that traverse the city. In all, there are over 128 miles of trails that go through parks or run along bayous.

Take Flight

For thrill seekers, not even the sky is the limit. Glide on a sailplane with the Greater Houston Soaring Association, or take a plunge on a skydiving adventure. Either way, you'll be soaring with delight.

Going For Gold

Houstonians are always on the go. Each year, thousands lace up for the Chevron Houston Marathon and gear up for the BP MS 150, a two-day cycling event that raises funds for multiple sclerosis. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy in between, too. HTX Bike Fest gets riders together in downtown Houston once a year, while Critical Mass provides a more social biking experience every month. For runners, there are tons of 5ks and half-marathons to participate in while you train for the big one. And if you really want to show your stuff, check out the Ironman race that occurs in the Houston area every year.

Time with the ones you love

Family-friendly fun abounds in and around Houston. Go wild at the Kemah Boardwalk and the Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Galveston. All ages can enjoy making friends with animals at the Houston Zoo and the Downtown Aquarium. The Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark in Buffalo Bayou Park is the perfect place for skateboarders to perfect their technique. Whatever your family is into, you can find something that everyone will enjoy.
